Designing for Automatic Pool Covers
Six examples of swimming pools with automatic coversNatural Setting
This backyard was designed to blend with the natural surroundings as much as possible. For convenience and weather reasons, under-track, automatic covers were installed for the pool and the raised spa. The designer explains that the covers will extend the swimming season by keeping the water warm as long as possible. However, they call for a rectangular shape, which he worried would be too formal for the setting. To balance the straight lines boulders were set into the perimeter of the pool and sweeping curves were used for the interior steps and built-ins.

Reduced Maintenance
This infinity pool's rectangular shape is conducive to swimming laps and the fact that an automatic cover was a must for this property. The designer explains that a cover will keep the many wild animals in the area from finding their way into the water. Furthermore, the cover reduces the amount of energy required to heat the water and keeps the pool clean. Long steps running the length of the pool add a touch of luxury.

Out-of-Sight
At the far end of this pool is a raised deck that houses an automatic pool cover and provides storage. Tracks run along the decking on either side of the pool to guide the cover into place. When the pool is in use, the cover is out-of-sight and out-of-mind. When not in use, the owners simply push a button and the cover appears to keep their children safe and the pool clean and warm.

Geometrical Contrast
The designer of this pool recommends using geometrical contrast to provide interest. "Although the design of the pool had to be rectilinear for the safety cover, we incorporated several circles that began within the pool and extended into the surrounding decking to soften the rectangle," he says. Additionally, the spa was placed inside the pool's footprint so that a separate cover would not be necessary.

Winter Wise
This pool is located in River Heights, UT, where winter temperatures fall into the teens and a foot of snow can accumulate. Suffice it to say that a cover was an absolute necessity. An automatic cover slides along beneath the coping, creating a neat, tidy look. The cover in integrated into the design so that it is almost invisible. To keep snow accumulation from putting unnecessary strain on the cover material, the water level must be kept high enough throughout the winter.

Simple & Convenient
Family fun and ADA accessibility were the top priorities of this backyard. Since the owner of this home is a disabled veteran, an automatic pool cover was a natural choice. He can easily cover the pool without needing assistance to drag a heavy cover into place. A Coverstar automatic cover, which comes in nine colors, was used for this pool.
